The global COVID-19 vaccination effort is dangerously off-track and grossly unequal, and there’s a risk that Australia’s ‘step up’ on aid in response to the pandemic remains temporary, even as COVID-19’s impact on global development will be felt for generations.
The COVID crisis isn’t going to end for anyone, until it ends for everyone.
There are two paths Australia could take:
By contributing $250m + 20m vaccines to the COVAX facility.
Under this plan, Australia can help lift global vaccination from 3 in 10 to 9 in 10.
Two thirds of 77 epidemiologists from 28 countries believed that it would take less than a year before the virus mutates to the point where the majority of first generation vaccines are rendered ineffective.
At current pace, 23 low income countries have such low rates of vaccination they would not reach 70% fully vaccinated by the end of this decade.
150 million more people will end up in extreme poverty as a result of the pandemic.
Add your voice to encourage Australia’s leaders to provide the vital support and action that is needed to help our most vulnerable neighbours recover from the pandemic and reset towards a more just, compassionate and sustainable society.
