Applications open for the 2025 Just Leadership Cohort
Changemakers. Does that word spark something in you?
If so, read on.
At Tearfund, we believe that real change starts with everyday people like you – people committed to doing things differently. People who take a stand, make decisions with purpose and walk a journey of faith that leads to justice.
We’re stronger when we act together. That’s why in 2024, we launched the inaugural Just Leadership Cohort – a program designed to empower the next generation of changemakers to step into leadership and address the root causes of poverty and injustice.
What is the Just Leadership Cohort?
Tearfund’s Just Leadership Cohort (JLC) brings together a community of passionate young adult Christians to equip them to engage with global challenges like poverty and injustice through integral mission, development, church engagement, and advocacy.
The eight-month experience combines in-person and online collective learning, individual reflection, mentoring, and project collaboration that supports participants to connect their Christian faith with the global challenges of poverty and injustice.
What kind of topics does the program cover?
Over the eight months, participants delve into a range of topics designed to inspire and equip them to take action. Some of the key areas covered include:
Biblically shaped justice - how God’s Word equips us to make biblically shaped responses to poverty
Engaging church and community - Connect with like-minded peers, to equip your local church and community to live and act justly
Learning from experts - Learn directly from Christian agency leaders working across Africa & Asia to grow and share your learning.
Connecting with mentors - Learn from experienced mentors at Tearfund, your church and through Australian leadership networks.
Advocacy for system change - Learn the skills to relationally & prayerfully advocate.
How much time do I need to commit for the program?
The Just Leadership Cohort is an eight-month program that runs from April - November. Participants commit to:
In person and online learning and sessions
Regular mentor meetings
Session preparation and action assignments
This structure is designed to fit into your busy schedule while providing opportunities for deep engagement and learning. You’ll be supported by Tearfund’s Advocacy and Influencing team, who will guide you throughout, offering advice and ensuring you make the most of the experience.
Hear from past JLC participants:
Jemma Scott
Jemma is currently serving communities in Perth
"I really loved hearing from the guest speaker, Ben Clarke, about Integral Mission. That was such an amazing insight into Tearfund and really what social justice looks like, and how to do it the way Jesus would."
Adelae Bowen
Adelae Bowen is an occupational therapist and film producer currently based in eastern Melbourne.
"Tearfund’s JLC program provided such a hopeful and engaging space to connect, learn and grow. I especially loved being able to gather regularly with wonderful individuals around the country, both JLC participants and Tearfund staff."
Scott Ward
Scott Ward is a theology student at Moore College, Sydney.
"As a theology student, it’s helped me realise that a church I help lead down the track can steadily pursue justice in ways that complement our mission to make and grow disciples of Jesus."
