Tearfund Australia has begun the process to search for its next CEO.
After 15 years leading the organisation, Matthew Maury has announced his plans to step down at the end of January 2025.
Matthew noted, "This has been a tough decision to make. I have really loved serving as the leader of an amazing organisation like Tearfund. The people, partners, and impact are all making a huge contribution to building a more just and compassionate world. I am pleased that Tearfund is in a strong position for a new person to bring their gifts and skills to the next season of putting Christ’s love into tangible action”.
Joanna Lee, Tearfund’s Board Chair, said “The Board has deeply valued Matthew’s faithful leadership and service to Tearfund over the past 15 years and has appreciated the way he has led with such strength through both the good and challenging times. His contributions to Tearfund as well as the sector in Australia and globally have left a legacy of positive impact in the fight against poverty and injustice. Matthew leaves big shoes to fill, but we know God is already preparing the next person to take the leadership baton.”
Tearfund supports over 100 projects in 20 countries through local Christian partners tackling the challenges of poverty in their local communities. Last year over 2.5 million people were touched by this work – with a priority for Hard Places where poverty and injustice are at their most extreme.
During Matthew’s tenure at Tearfund he has brought Tearfund’s voice and perspective into wider sector work. He served as Vice Chair of the ACFID Board, Founding Chair of the Emergency Action Alliance, Chair of the Development Practice Committee of ACFID, as a Board Member for Make Poverty History, on the Executive Committee of the Integral Alliance, as a Board member for Micah Australia, and also served as Chair of Micah Global.
The Tearfund Board is working with the Executive search firm, People for Purpose, to identify the next leader and encourages people to join them in sharing the opportunity and praying for the transition.
