Every day, hundreds of millions of people around the world need to leave their home to collect water for their family’s needs. This water does not come easily or safely for nearly three quarters of the global population.
The lack of access to safe water pushes people into deeper poverty: water scarcity and drought remain some of the leading trends driving humanitarian needs around the world.
You can help change water today. From dirty to clean, from out of reach to near, from a burdensome task to a source of life. Will you give the gift of water today?
Pansu lives in Pakistan, one of the world’s most water-stressed countries. Nearly 126 million people – or about half the population – lack safely managed water services, and 166 million lack safely managed sanitation services. Nearly 80 million people don’t have access to a proper toilet.
With your support, people like Pansu can access life-giving water through our partners' safe water, hygiene and sanitation projects.
Tearfund Australia is a movement of Christians working in partnership to end poverty and tackle injustice. We partner with Christians in Australia and around the world as changemakers to tackle the root causes of poverty, release hope, champion justice and equip communities to flourish.
Your gift to this appeal will go towards water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) projects across Africa, South Asia and South-East Asia, helping to bring transformation in communities impacted by water scarcity and sanitation challenges.
Tearfund’s local Christian partners are working with communities to bring safe, clean water to thousands of people – and with it, renewed hope and health. Here are four examples of their work in Ethiopia, Zambia, Laos and Pakistan.
Our local Christian partner, Ethiopian Kale Heywet Church Development Commission (EKHCDC) is working with communities to establish water supply infrastructure and promote simple measures that improve hygiene and sanitation.
Our local Christian partner, Reformed Open Community Schools (ROCS) has worked with school communities to upgrade toilet facilities, allowing better airflow and reduced odour and flies, which can spread disease. The blocks also include a private washroom for girls – so that their monthly period doesn’t hold them back from coming to school.
Tearfund’s partner World Concern Laos helps equip teachers with training in safe sanitation practices. They also work with schools to construct handwashing stations and ensure they’re properly maintained.
Our local Christian partner, the Diocese of Hyderabad, is supporting households to build latrines, and access safe drinking water by installing pumps and water filters. They’ve seen incredible progress in the last few years, reporting an 85% reduction in waterborne diseases across 30 villages.
Water is essential to life. Without it, people cannot flourish. But in many parts of the world, a lack of access to safe water is pushing people deeper into poverty, putting lives, health and development at risk. We know that overcoming the barriers to safe water doesn’t just quench thirst: it transforms lives.
