Historical information (2019):

Cyclone Idai has struck Mozambique and neighbouring countries with “massive and horrifying” impacts. Tearfund Australia is supporting our local partners to provide immediate relief.

Update: October 2019

It has now been six months since Cyclone Idai made landfall at Beira, Mozambique and we wanted to give you an update on what’s been happening on the ground through the work of Tearfund’s local partner Oasis Mozambique.

Cyclone Idai struck central Mozambique on 14 March affecting nearly two million people and claimed over 600 lives.

Through your generosity, Oasis Mozambique has been able to provide emergency relief to over 14,000 people through the distribution of:

  • Relief food packs
  • Water treatment chemicals
  • Mosquito nets
  • Housing materials for the most vulnerable families
  • Information about keeping healthy

Oasis Mozambique has been working in the Manga Loforte area for many years and has built significant relationships and trust with the community during that time. It is through these relationships that the staff have played a critical role to help rebuild hope for many of the members of the community who have experienced trauma. This is in addition to providing more practical support.

On a recent visit, international program officer Jenny Beechey reflected that “Oasis is part of the community and the community is part of Oasis. People have been relieved to have them here and helping them.”

It is also through these ongoing relationships that Oasis has provided ongoing support to meet the physical and emotional needs of their community.

Jenny is in frequent contact with Oasis. Watch her update below.

Update: April 2019

Your generous donations to Tearfund have enabled our local partner Oasis Mozambique to distribute emergency supplies to nearly 13,000 people, including food, water treatment chemicals and hygiene kits.

Through its trained volunteers, Oasis continues to demonstrate Christ’s love and care for the most vulnerable in the city of Beira, by erecting temporary shelters and directly assisting families with sick or injured members.

Please keep praying for God to strengthen our partners and that He provides fresh hope to the affected communities.

On Thursday 14 March 2019, Cyclone Idai, an intense category 3 tropical cyclone, struck Mozambique with winds of over 170 kmh. The severity of damage meant that it was several days before international rescue teams managed to reach the city of Beira at the centre of the devastated area. Aid teams have described the impact on Beira as “massive and horrifying”.

Tearfund’s long-term local Christian partner, Oasis, is based in Beira, where they serve 5,400 households through a community health and empowerment project. For an area that is already vulnerable to flooding and water borne diseases, the impact of Cyclone Idai has been catastrophic, and Oasis’ work will be even more crucial.

Tearfund is supporting Oasis and other local partners to provide immediate relief to some of the hardest hit families in Mozambique and Zimbabwe. Electricity is still down, and telecommunications are limited meaning the impact on the community is still not fully known. Partners will continue to assess the unfolding disaster and the immediate needs of impacted communities.

Tearfund has launched the Cyclone Idai Emergency Appeal.

In cooperation with Oasis and other local partners, and working alongside members of Integral Alliance including Tearfund UK, donations to the appeal will be used to:

  • Undertake assessments and distribute relief in affected communities
  • Respond to urgent community needs, including providing emergency hygiene supplies, food and blankets to displaced families
  • Plan and work towards long-term recovery for families in the months and years ahead.

We will provide further details as the immediate needs of the communities becomes clearer, along with additional prayer points.

“It seems that 90 percent of the area is completely destroyed. The situation is terrible. The scale of devastation is enormous.”

– Jamie LeSueur, emergency operations manager, International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies

“If these reports, these fears, are realized, then we can say that this is one of the worst weather-related disasters in the Southern Hemisphere.”

– Clare Nullis, spokeswoman for the World Meteorological Organization

Prayer for Mozambique and Zimbabwe:

Lord, we bring to you the people of Mozambique and Zimbabwe who are impacted by Cyclone Idai. We ask that you would sustain those who have lost loved ones, homes and livelihoods. Comfort them and give them a sense of your love, presence and provision.

We thank you for our partner, Oasis. As their team of staff and volunteers work together through their own fear, pain and grief, may you equip them also as they reach out to the hardest hit families in the communities around Beira. We ask for their protection as they navigate this situation, and that resources and support will be mobilised quickly and effectively.
