Jasira’s Story

Right now, the world’s hardest places are thrust into what is being called a polycrisis, in which the impact of overlapping challenges is greater than the sum of the parts. In Somalia, for example, severe drought, hunger, disease and violence have merged to bring the country to the brink of famine. An estimated 8.25 million people in Somalia, including 1.5 million children under five, are facing severe food insecurity following prolonged drought, and conflict is exacerbating these injustices, displacing hundreds of thousands of people.

One of those people is Jasira*, who fled with her baby from her small farm in Somalia which was decimated by drought. She is now living in a camp for internally displaced people where Tearfund’s partner Medair is providing clean, safe water, and running health facilities and clinics that provide treatment for acute malnutrition.

Jasira is especially grateful for the support she has received. She said, “It was a long and dangerous journey for me and my infant to find your support here in this community. We all are very thankful that you care about us … In the morning, we are sure that your trucks arrive and bring fresh and safe water.”

Tearfund’s partners need your support to help people like Jasira who face the devastating impacts of intersecting crises.

Please give today to help strengthen hope for a better future in hard places.
