At Tearfund, we believe that real change starts with everyday people like you – people committed to doing things differently. People who take a stand, make decisions with purpose and walk a journey of faith that leads to justice.

That’s why in 2024, we launched the inaugural Just Leadership Cohort – a program designed to empower the next generation of Australian changemakers to step into leadership and bring their vision to the challenges of poverty and injustice facing our world today.

Three years on and this Cohort has become a growing network of young leaders - connecting, collaborating and championing justice in their churches, workplaces, local communities and around the world.

What is the Just Leadership Cohort?

Tearfund’s Just Leadership Cohort (JLC) brings together a community of passionate young adult Christians to equip them to engage with global challenges like poverty and injustice through integral mission, community development, church engagement, and advocacy.

The ten-month experience combines in-person and online learning and mentoring, alongside real-world, community-based action. At every step, participants are making connections between their Christian faith, their calling, and their part in tackling poverty and injustice.

What kind of topics does the program cover?

The program covers the essential elements of:

Biblically shaped justice - how God’s Word equips us to make biblically shaped responses to poverty
Engaging church and community - Connect with like-minded peers, to equip your local church and community to live and act justly
Learning from experts - Learn directly from Christian agency leaders working across Africa & Asia to grow and share your learning.
Connecting with mentors - Learn from experienced mentors at Tearfund, your church and through Australian leadership networks.
Advocacy for system change - Learn the skills to relationally & prayerfully advocate.

All supported by faith practices and tools to help you sustain and nourish your faith as we work together towards justice.

How much time do I need to commit for the program?

The Just Leadership Cohort is a ten-month program that runs from February - November. Participants commit to:

In person and online learning and sessions
Regular mentor meetings
Session preparation and action assignments

This structure is designed to fit into your busy schedule while providing opportunities for deep engagement and learning. You’ll be supported by Tearfund’s Advocacy and Church Engagement team, who will guide you throughout, offering advice and ensuring you make the most of the experience.

JLC taking action

The Just Leadership Cohort provides several opportunities to get hands on and involved during the year, including speaking engagements, advocacy actions, meeting international partners, contributing thought pieces to Tearfund communications, and various other actions.

Recently, 2026 JLC members Adalia and Matthew joined long-time Tearfund Ambassador Joel McKerrow for a brand new season of the Tearfund Australia Podcast. Together with special guests, they explore themes of hope, climate, and justice through wholehearted, cross-generational conversations.
