For years, 15-year-old Doctor Opio was confined to his home, unable to attend school or fully engage in life alongside his community in Karamoja, Uganda. But through the generosity of supporters like you and the work of Tearfund’s local partner, Doctor Opio received a gift that changed the course of his life.
Doctor Opio lives in a village in Karamoja, Uganda, where drought, conflict and food insecurity have created back-to-back crises for communities, tightening the grip of poverty and holding people back from the fullness of life God intends for them.
At 15 years old, he’s not a doctor – yet – but has big plans for his future, inspired and equipped by the opportunities opened up through Tearfund’s Christian partner Vision Terudo.
Vision Terudo works in communities across Karamoja, coming alongside people like Doctor Opio to respond to the daily challenges of poverty and build more resilient communities.
When Doctor Opio was 10 he became ill and, unable to access the treatment he needed, lost the use of his legs.
“I could no longer go to school, I couldn’t go outside and play with my friends. I couldn’t even go to the bathroom,” he says.
“For four years I was stuck. But then Vision Terudo came and gave me a wheelchair! It has really helped me a lot, and now I’m able to do everything with this wheelchair."
"When I grow up I want to be a doctor – that’s why I’m called Doctor Opio. I want to help other children in Karamoja too so that they can succeed in life.”
Doctor Opio’s story – of hope restored, and daring to dream of a brighter future – is the kind of change you will be supporting through a gift in your Will
