Tearfund supporter Jane Irwin speaks to the love and faith that have shaped a life of generosity – now and into the future.
After losing her husband 15 years ago, she revisited their shared decision to leave a gift in their Will to Tearfund. “Tearfund is a very important organisation for me. It has Christian values that care about God in the world, particularly those who are poor,” she says.
The generosity and faith that shapes Jane’s care and concern for her children has also shaped the care and concern she has for those outside of her immediate family: “If I can let the light of the Lord live in me and through me to others in the way that I live and speak and organise my Will, then I don’t need to make a big fuss about it. It’s just something I’ll hopefully be able to quietly do.”
“Other parts of being generous are giving regularly to my church, to Tearfund and to other organisations; another part of giving is to care for my neighbors around me and to stand up for social justice issues, particularly climate change.
It is about loving the Lord and loving not just his people, but the world’s people, because they’re people that he has created, people that he loves, and he particularly loves the poor. The Bible is quite clear about that.”
Jane knows that a gift in your Will can make an ongoing difference for people you will never meet, but whose lives will be changed by your kindness.
“Your fingerprint on what you have given out of the love and generosity in your heart will make a lasting difference in their lives: in the lives of their community, in the lives of their children,” Jane shares.
“I will never know them. But that doesn’t really matter. God knows them, he knows their needs; and they’ll know that somebody somewhere cares and that they’re not forgotten, in the midst of a life that is challenging and hard.”
