From Tearfund to Tear and back again
Global challenges require a global response. Driven by our vision and responding to the unprecedented challenges of our time, TEAR Australia has changed its name to Tearfund as we seek to grow our impact together with others in the worldwide Tearfund family towards a more just and compassionate world.
On October 1 2020, we changed our name to Tearfund, bringing us closer together with the other Tearfund agencies in the UK, US, Canada, Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, France, New Zealand and Ireland.
Tearfund’s vision for a just and compassionate world is as clear and strong as ever. Our work, focus and passion to serve the world’s most vulnerable and to engage Christians in Australia with the discipleship implications of the good news today won’t cease.
For those who have supported TEAR Australia for many years, you might have already been calling us Tearfund since that was our original name. For others, it’s brand new. Either way, our vision for a just and compassionate world is as clear and strong as ever. Today we are a movement of more than 50,000 Christians in Australia and with our shared hearts and commitment to serve Jesus in many of the world’s hardest places, we will continue to explore how together we can be bearers of practical, tangible ‘good news’ in our world today.
“The Spirit of the Lord is on me,
because he has anointed me
to proclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners
and recovery of sight for the blind,
to set the oppressed free,
to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor."
(Luke 4:18-19)
This is the beginning of an exciting new chapter. TEAR Australia as a name has ceased as we have again become Tearfund, however our work, focus and passion to serve the world’s most vulnerable and to engage Christians in Australia with the discipleship implications of the good news today won’t cease. In fact, as we prepare to celebrate our 50th year in 2021, be assured that we are only just getting started.
TEAR Australia was originally formed as Tearfund Australia as part of the Australian Evangelical Alliance (AEA) in July 1971. Under the AEA, Tearfund grew to the point that in 1998, and with the blessing of the AEA, TEAR Australia was incorporated as a legally independent agency.
On 1 October 2020 TEAR Australia aligned its name with the wider global Tearfund family by taking up the name Tearfund.
