Tearfund has a commitment to supporting courageous partners working in “hard places” like Afghanistan – places where people face a lack of food or income, displacement and violence. Places where poverty and injustice are overlaid by conflict, lack of security and high levels of instability.
With the political upheaval in Afghanistan nearly a year ago, the country now faces an uncertain future – and humanitarian and economic crises. Tearfund’s commitment to Afghanistan remains steadfast, and our partners – many of whom we have been working with for decades – are doing all they can to support people there.
Abdul, who comes from a village in Afghanistan’s Kabul province, used to be able to provide for his family through his work as a teacher. Since the political upheaval of August 2021, he is not allowed to work as a teacher. His disability means he cannot do other work.
“Now living and finding food materials for my family is getting so hard to me,” he says.
When they have enough to spare, his neighbours will share food with him and his family – but they’re not always able to.
“So I face a lot of problems,” he says.
One of Tearfund’s partners has been delivering emergency relief in Abdul’s village as part of its emergency response.
I am very happy to receive food, hygiene kits and blankets, which is a good package for my family,” Abdul said. “I am thankful for the timely help they have done for my family and me.
The conflict and upheaval in Afghanistan over the past year have compounded the challenges of extreme drought (the worst in nearly three decades), food insecurity and the COVID-19 pandemic. An estimated 4.2 million people are internally displaced, and 23 million are in need of aid.
We’re so thankful that, after having had to pause their work in August 2021, our partners in Afghanistan are now able to offer humanitarian relief.
