In Nagpur, India, Archana’s life has been defined by a series of pivots.
Twenty years ago, she was working at a bank when a motorbike accident changed everything. Archana lost her left arm at the shoulder, and her husband suffered significant injuries to his arm and leg. In the hospital, the pressure from those around her was immense; some relatives even suggested she leave her husband.
Archana stayed. While he was still recovering in hospital, she began teaching herself how to manage every household task with one hand. She refused to let the accident dictate their future.
Eventually, she and her husband met staff from our local partner, EFICOR, who supported them to start a small business selling handbags and clothing. It was a success, so much so that Archana later received an award for her project.
But in 2024, a new tragedy struck. Archana’s husband passed away after a fall. The loss was a different kind of injury. The grief led to a period of deep depression and isolation; Archana stayed home, unable to look past the weight of her husband’s death.
The turning point wasn't a handout, but an invitation back into a community.
Recognising her strength, EFICOR staff encouraged Archana to join their Arts-Based Therapy (ABT) program. It was a space for drums, dance, and movement. For Archana, the physical rhythm of the drums did what words couldn’t – it broke the silence of her grief and reminded her of the capability she had always possessed.
Today, Archana is running her business, caring for her nephew, and has become a local leader – encouraging others in her community to join self-help groups and therapy programs. She isn’t looking back at what was lost.
"My focus is no longer on my arm," Archana says. "Now it’s on the business. I love to go to ABT and I don’t have worries. This is my second life."
Life is not a straight line. For people living in poverty, one setback can easily undo the progress that has been made. That’s why our partners work with the community for the long haul, supporting them as they work to lift themselves out of poverty.
Long-term change takes long-term commitment, and we’re grateful for your partnership with us.
