Stories

For Tearfund supporter Franca Sala Tenna, philanthropy is more than just an act of generosity – it’s a calling deeply rooted in faith, justice and a desire to support vulnerable women and children.

Through her businesses EEO Specialists and Online Compliance Training (OCT), Perth-based Franca has donated significant funds to support Tearfund. She recently shared with us about her journey with Tearfund, her commitment to social justice and the role of faith in her work.

A connection forged in faith

Franca’s relationship with Tearfund began when she was just 19.

“Shortly after I joined a church, I was fortunate that Lorelle Wadley, who worked with Tearfund at the time, was part of my church community. From the beginning of my faith journey, I connected with Tearfund, social justice and caring for the disadvantaged,” she explained.

This early connection shaped her worldview, intertwining her faith with a commitment to serving people in need. Over the years, her bond with Tearfund has deepened, becoming an integral part of her philanthropic mission.

A heart for vulnerable women and children

Asked why she focuses on supporting vulnerable women and children globally, Franca’s response is both heartfelt and pragmatic: “Why wouldn’t I? Women and children are the most disadvantaged group of people in the world. Yet, when given the opportunity to thrive, they are more likely to give back to their families and communities,” she said.

Franca reflects with gratitude on the advantages she’s had – such as a stable upbringing, access to education, and opportunities within a free society – and how they’ve shaped her path. “I can’t think of a better way to use my money than giving it to other women so that they may have a better chance in life,” she said.

Business built on generosity

Franca is redefining corporate philanthropy by incorporating it into her business model. “I reached a point where I decided I had ‘enough’ and wanted to ramp up my giving,” she said

She has established three tiers of philanthropy, and Tearfund is a grateful recipient of tier 1.

Every year, 40% of OCT online course sales and 10% of EEO workshop sales are donated to charities. Last year, Franca introduced “Ignition Sponsorships”, which enable small charities to bring their innovative ideas to life. Franca plans to grow this initiative in 2025.

My attachment to money hasn’t changed; it’s always been about giving generously and with a grateful heart for the difference this money can make in others’ lives.

The role of faith

For Franca, Christian faith isn’t just another aspect of her life – it’s a major influence. “My relationship with Jesus is like one of best friends. We hang out together, talk a lot, and he’s my role model,” she said.

From her early 20s, when she gave financially as a student, to her current status as a successful entrepreneur, her faith has remained steadfast. “My attachment to money hasn’t changed; it’s always been about giving generously and with a grateful heart for the difference this money can make in others’ lives,” she said

Partnerships are central to the work of Tearfund. Just as we partner with local Christian organisations around the world who are deeply connected and committed to the communities they’re part of, so too do we partner with Australians in their context – people like Franca – so they can be partners in tackling injustice.

As Franca continues her work, her passion for empowering others remains undiminished. Through her business, philanthropy, and faith, she’s not just changing lives – she’s inspiring others to do the same.
