Afghanistan today: faithful support through ongoing challenges

Stories

One year on from the sudden change in government in Afghanistan, Tearfund’s local partners continue to be a faithful presence, meeting the challenges of their communities with hope and care. Thank you for standing alongside our partners in Afghanistan.

We are thankful for the work of our partners and their staff, responding to the enormous need they are seeing in their communities, despite the challenges that they and their own families face.

The events of August 2021 have resulted in an unprecedented humanitarian need in Afghanistan. 75% of the country’s economy was supported by international funding under the previous government. The introduction of sweeping sanctions in August 2021 have resulted in record levels of unemployment, skyrocketing inflation and a liquidity crisis for Afghanistan’s 40 million people. This is on top of drought, unseasonal flooding and a large magnitude earthquake that killed over 1,000 people. It is estimated that 97% of the population has fallen into poverty. Hunger has become a chronic and alarmingly widespread issue; for almost 9 months, over 90% of the population have faced insufficient food consumption.

Tearfund’s partners have been supporting internally displaced people with relief supplies (food, shelter and hygiene) as well as supporting the recovery of communities through providing income generating opportunities and mental health support for people who have experienced trauma.

Aleem’s story

Aleem*, a father of five living in Kabul city, makes a small living from working in the gardens of people in his community. Living with a disability, Aleem is limited in the type of work he can do, and relies all the more on the skills he’s developed to provide for his family.

“Sometimes I find work but most of the time I cannot find work and it is difficult for me to live a normal life,” shares Aleem.

When his son became ill, Aleem’s situation became dire, as medical expenses drained his income. But Tearfund’s local partner was able to connect with Aleem and provide food, hygiene supplies and blankets, bringing immediate relief for his family. This kind of support has impacted hundreds of families facing prolonged uncertainty and compounding challenges.

Aleem says: “I am very happy for [Tearfund’s partner] that they worked very transparently, and I pray to God to bless them.”
