Appeal Afghanistan 2021 MA n1e

Afghanistan Appeal

The unfolding humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan, the result of food insecurity and conflict, is forcing thousands of people from their homes.

Give now

Conflict in Afghanistan has resulted in the displacement of thousands of people and is compounded by extreme drought and food insecurity leaving millions in need of assistance.

As a result of this unfolding situation, a deepening humanitarian crisis is emerging leading to hunger and homelessness.

  • 18 million people need humanitarian assistance1
  • 75% of people in need are women and children1
  • 3.1 million children suffer from acute malnutrition1

A humanitarian crisis of incredible proportions is unfolding before our eyes.

Mary Ellen McGroarty Head of the UN’s World Food Programme in Afghanistan

Tearfund’s commitment to Afghanistan and our partners remains steadfast.

For over four decades, Tearfund has stood alongside our local partners in Afghanistan in working towards a more just and compassionate world.

Over the past few weeks, Tearfund staff have been working with our local partners to ensure the safety and security of the local staff - this work remains ongoing. At the same time we are preparing for the uncertainty and challenges that lie ahead. Today, our partners are not yet in a position to begin their humanitarian response - but that day is coming soon and the challenges are immense.

The number of people needing humanitarian assistance has risen by 30% since 2020 and much of the country is in extreme drought. Without a healthy harvest, the coming winter will be harsher than ever. The level of severe malnutrition in children is staggering.

Due to the unfolding and uncertain political crisis in Afghanistan, all of the work of our partners is currently on hold and we are in constant contact with partners as to the best way we can support them and the communities they serve at this difficult time.

We maintain our long term commitment to our partners in Afghanistan. Tearfund is currently accepting donations for our work in Afghanistan with the hope that these funds will be able to be delivered in response to the unfolding humanitarian needs, when circumstances allow.

You can show Afghan people that they have not been forgotten.

Pray for Afghanistan

During this very uncertain time in Afghanistan, please pray for Tearfund’s Afghan partners and the communities they have so faithfully served over many years. Please remember the very difficult decisions that they need to make. May they know God’s wisdom and be able to demonstrate love and compassion to those who are facing an uncertain future.

Donate Responsibly

During times of humanitarian crises people, especially Australians, feel compelled to give generously. When disasters strike, people often ask Tearfund whether we can accept goods for those who have suffered, and send them to our local partner organisations. While we are always grateful for offers of support and we recognise that people respond from their hearts and out of compassion, sending goods is rarely the best way to support those in need overseas. The website https://donateresponsibly.org/ explains more.

Your donation to Tearfund’s ‘Afghanistan Appeal’ will, when it is possible, be used by Tearfund's partners for humanitarian response activities to assist communities impacted by the recent conflict in Afghanistan. This appeal closes on 31 December 2021. If it is not possible to use donations in Afghanistan or if excess donations are received, or received after this date, they will be redirected to other humanitarian response activities.
